Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to present "Dress Envy", a group exhibition exploring the desire of dress, through a variety of media. 

Photography has played a primary role in societal views of women’s dress and fashion.  Through the work of French fashion photographer, Georges Daumbier, the viewer is transported to the glorious rise of French fashion through the eyes of an artist, present in the explosive rebirth of France after World War II.  Daumbier takes an avant-garde approach to fashion in every day scenarios where models interact with the public.  While the dress is his subject, the women by whom they are worn transform the clothing.

Jessica Craig-Martin captures her subjects brilliantly with saturated images of socialites in cocktail attire. Craig-Martins’ images have a melancholy edge, focusing on socialites in cocktail attire, with sagging and overly tanned skin, highly processed makeup, and cosmetically upgraded breasts.  While some may view the images and want the dresses worn by these subjects, it is questionable if many would want to be the subject of her work.

Margeaux Walter investigates the psyche of how we present ourselves through lenticular photography. Walter's subject is her self, dressed as men and women, interacting as individuals in a crowd. One’s personality is found in each character’s dress and individual style.   The characters laugh, glare, and stare off into the distance.

Sculptural work in the exhibition focuses on the dress more traditionally as the subject.  Mielle Riggie’s glass dresses are ghostly kiln formed glass castings that appear to hover above glass rocking chair legs.   Tori Ellison’s paper and twine dress “Common Thread”, hangs on the wall and welcomes the changes of life and death as it presents a statement on mortality. “Common Thread” focuses on identity, time, and memory, in abstracted organic elements.

James Allen’s excavated books show the changes of women’s dress and under dress as they developed chronologically.  However, by Allen excavating the pages, the linear time becomes flattened out bringing many costumes from the past together in a brand new image for the present.
